Can a steering shaft be made longer/shorter safely

I've been thinking about resto-modding a tilt/cruise control column into my 'stang. I've looked into a few and have some definite possibilities. However, I'm not sure if the shaft itself will be too long.
So, the question is: can a steering shaft be shortened? If so, how?

You could cut down the shaft to the length you need and then rejoin the two shorter
pieces using a needle bearing universal joint or solid coupler. Flaming River sells both.
