On Dees 67's sunroof question, someone posted that there was an original, factory sunroof 64.5 in their area for awhile. I've never heard anything about this - does anyone have any information on this, such as was this something that Ford would have done? I don't think I've ever seen a car from 1965 and older with a sunroof, regardless of manufacturer...

I've seen a number of 64-66 coupes and fastbacks with sunroofs. Believe what you will find (like the fastback vinyl tops) that they were dealer done.

In general there were a number of companies that installed these (normally one of two versions - a metal panel and a fabric - VW style)

Even seen a couple on Export cars.. Of the San Jose cars I've seen all of them were southern Calif cars

maybe it could be one of those "special" options that were put on ford exec's cars like full leather interior etc.

TennesseeCub- The 1960 Thunderbird had a factory sunroof as an option. I believe that there were others but it's not that important. But the T-Bird did have one.

Certainly -- but even those weren't really "factory," but instead custom-installed on the car after it left the assembly line. As for the sunroof, Jeff's position that these were installed after delivery to the dealership is the most likely explanation, and unless an owner can produce original paperwork which clearly shows their car came from the factory with a sunroof, any claim of it being a "factory" option should be taken with a handful of salt.

Whether the car was purchased with a sunroof originally is another question entirely -- just as today, dealers may take it upon themselves to add an accessory they feel might attract the attention of a potential buyer, and if a potential customer carried in a suitcase full of cash and demanded a leopard-patterned Mustang with fur-trimmed seats and a spotted steering wheel you can bet they'd find a way to deliver one. Again, though, the burden of proof for "originality" falls on the owner making the claim.
