Can the trans kickdown rod be removed on a 351w, FMX, without encountering driving problems? I assume downshifting would have to be manual, via the shifter, afterwards.
Some VMFers have stated they prefer to drive without a kickdown. Yes, you can. Don't lose it the parts so you can hook back up if you get tired of shifting.

For passing at higher speeds (over 40 or so), yes....for lower speed driving, such as accelerating after rounding a corner, the governor and throttle valve will still auto downshift based on engine vacuum...
I've never had a kickdown linkage on the D-coder in all the years I've owned it...never missed it..
