I came across a fourteen year old magazine with an article by Paul Zazarine where he attempted to document the 500 top USA Musclecars by means of power to weight ratio and here's the top five:
1965 Shelby Cobra 427/425hp 2529lbs. Pwr. t Wt 5:95:1

1966 Shelby Stang 289/447 2800 6.26:1

1968 Mustang GT 390/390 2659 6.82:1

1966 Corvette 427/425 2985 7.02:1

1966-67 Shelby Cobra 428/355 2529 7.12:1

Down the list are COPO Camaros, 426 hemi belvederes, Bosses , etc. But an amazing amount of fomoco's on the first page.

I think Mr Paul Zazarine has his math wrong. Using the published numbers, he is calculating "Pounds per Horsepower" not the more typical "Power to weight" ratio.

If he was calculating Pwr/wt then higher numbers would indicate a "faster" or "better" musclecar. In this case, lower numbers or fewer "pounds per horsepower" are better. He's probably addressing acceleration anyway.

Oh well, since it's 14 years old, I guess we can't be picky!

Yeah, he admitted that there were a lot of variables and that it was hard to satisfy real scientists of the art; horsepower ratings at that time involved engines without any power-robbing devices like even a fan, water pump, or air filter, and on top of that there was pressurized air induction. I wonder where the weight statistics came from. How much extra does deluxe interior weigh, fastback or convertible....there're too many elements to comprehend and lots of opportunity for arguement, but it's a cool article.
