Well, I'm finally in...couldn't get my pswd cause my mail server was done...what a day...anyway, this is an update to my charging/over charging problem I was having...a quick summary - battery was being drained about 11v with car turned off and battery was getting a 17-18v charge while car was running...I was nicely advised to check out the voltage regulator. Sure enough, got a new one and everything is fine...thanx everyone for responding...Guy(NH)

The mechanical VRs are prone to wear. Modern solid state voltage regulators that are pin-compatible with the originals are available. Since there are no moving parts, there is no wear.
The life of a solid state VR can be shortened by voltage surges, so be careful when jump starting.
