Yes as it will/can cause a rich condition that dumps unburned fuel into the exhaust and then gets ignited,,If you are not wanting to run a functional choke make sure it is in the full open position

the choke plate/butterfly is the circular piece of metal that sits in your carb throat that opens and closes with automatic choke operation. when cold it is closed (restricts air from entering carb -thus air-fuel ratio rich with gas) and as car warms up hot air comes up thru hot tube attacked to auto choke mecanism which causes a metalic spring to open up and opoen that valve giving a less rich mixture aand should be fully open after warm up - about 3 to 5 minutes.
