The 66 has a flat rubber seal screwed to the firewall, and the column pokes through it. The bottom end is sealed with a large rubber grommet.

I don't think there is supposed to be any sealant on the grommets.

All firewall penetrations were sealed with sound deadener at the factory. If you're wanting to do it as original, sound deadener will coat the entire flat grommet on the firewall side and extend 1 - 3 inches down the steering column.

Evercoat sound deadener in a spray can has a very similar appearance to the original sound deadener. NPD carries it.
