Don't be surprised if your temp gauge goes up a little bit.
I used a couple of bolts that fit in the hose and clamped them. What you have will work for a while, the water doesn't really need to flow, just not leak. A dead end is better.

I'm in the process of rebuilding my heater box. I opted to buy a new Spectra aluminum(Made in China) core. It didn't fit the factory box, I would have had to grind about a 1/4" from the the box to make it fit. I decided to return it and will order a new copper core from NPD. I thought about doing a pressure test on my original core but probably not worth it in the end.

I used the NPD supplied parts when I rebuilt mine (copper core). Everything fit like the OE parts that I removed and the entire unit works better than ever.
