I have an original '67 390 coupe that has an air cleaner that is unlike what I am accustomed to on the 390 cars. The air cleaner that I am familiar with has two screen covered inlets for air and no snorkel. The air breather on my car looks pretty much like a normal snorkel unit. Now the big question - The Build Sheet that I have lists the air cleaner as being (Prefix) - C7ZF and the (Suffix) - J. Can anyone decode these numbers and tell me if my air cleaner is correct to this car. I have had one person say it is but he also said the build sheet will be the determining factor.

Thanks,

While I do not have the MPC with me (little too big to carry everywhere), we can determine a few things based on when and where your coupe was built. So, what is the build date, assembly plant, and DSO?

There are 3 known versions of the 67 air cleaner assembly:
1. The round one with 2 screens, & chrome top (like the one you most commonly see.
2. Another round one, with 2 screens, and an elbow fitting at the front for the hose that connects to the lh breather cap. This has a chrome top too. These have shown up on very late 67s.
3. A snorkle-based model that is round. The snorkle is not like other mustang snorkles. This one is long and tapers to the end (It is the same as T-bird snorkles). This one also has a chrome top. This assembly only showed up on very early San Jose with the LA DSO mustangs.

My car's original air cleaner was replaced with an oval aftermarket unit long befoer I bought it, however, my neighbor with a stock 390 under her hood has the tapered snorkle and she bought it from the original owner who claims no modifications.

Jess,Rick's gta390 convertible that we were talking about at Monroe swap is pretty much an untouched original, and it has the tapered snorkel housing with chrome lid.If I remember correctly ithas a Aug / or Sept 66 build date.It also has factory AC,could that be a factor? Both of my fastbacks have the dual screens w/o elbow.
