When I rebuilt my engine (again) I decided to get a rev-limiter to help protect it when I'd get a little excited while breaking it in. I wired in a Crane Hi-6, set the dials to 4500 rpm and it fired up in to life. Well I never hammered it anyway for the first 2000+ miles then one day after I solved my pinging woes I took it for a real tryout. I noticed while shifting up the gears I was racing past 4500 rpm but I was changing at 5000+ anyway. I checked the wiring and the install instructions, did the tests they have built in, tried setting the limit to a very low 2000 rpm and revved it there in my garage, went straight past the limit again.
I called Crane this morning and discovered that another wire (the yellow one) needs to be connected to the ignition key (live) also, this is the enable for the rev-limiter, funny how it isn't in the part of the install manual where you'd expect it when you follow the normal instructions. The 'yellow' wire is shown in the diagrams as the stage-limit wire, after talking to Cranes Tech support and getting the answer I also now understand (I think) what the purpose of a stage limit switch is for (ie you thumb it when you are making burnouts before a run and don't want to bother looking at your tach, it controls the limit, racing you remove the said thumb and floor it, shifting where you are willing to risk it - right).
Anyway, that information in place I shall do the necessary splice (luckily I didn't cut off the entire length of the yellow wire as the instructions suggest - cut back if not used). Lets see.....
