I'm using Rainbow Industries rattle cans to paint my dash.I bead blasted the ash tray to bare metal but will still need some work. What type of primer will work under the lacquer?(ash tray only).Thanks.

Pick up a spray can of primer from your local automotive supply store. It should work just fine.

I just painted some parts with Rainbow Industries charcoal metallic paint. I will never buy their paint again. Its mostly clear. You will need at least 4 cans to paint your dash unless you paint it black lacquer first.

Barring all that, as a rule lacquer and enamel paints do not mix so I recommend a lacquer primer or an epoxy primer. Plasticote makes a rattle can epoxy primer that works fine for what you are doing.

Since you are painting just the ashtry 1 can should work, but wait a half hour between coats because the pigment will pull away from the corners showing the primer underneath. good luck
