Tax returns are in boys, so you know what that means! I am looking at the next repair (and potential upgrade) on the old girl and right now I think the rear end could use some lovin. No pun intended. What I don't understand is that NPD's kit is well over double the cost of CJ's. Can you take a look and tell me if there's something I am missing for the prices to be so different? The only thing I could see is the shims???

CJ's overhaul kit $120.99

NPD's overhaul kit $292.41

I may even do a re-gear to 3.55 while I am in there and I am looking at these two sets. Any others you would recommend would be nice!

Yukon 3.55 from NPD

Currie 3.25 from CJ

Additionally, while trying to fix a fuel leak I pulled the hose connection off the fuel pump by accident, it seemed to be press fit but I figured it was a good excuse to replace the still working one that had been on there for the last 17 years. I tapped the connection back in with a brass punch and will shelve it, but I ordered a Carter replacement from CJ. Is that what everyone is using? Naturally I couldn't just do the pump and be happy, I had to go and re-hose the inline filter and throw some braided sheathing over it because I can't leave anything be.

Yukon parts always seem to be higher priced than anyone else, no matter where you go. Summit carries a wide range of 8" installation kits for less than both options.

If you don't have the tools for the job, you might be better off sending your rear to Alan at Ford 8 & 9 Inch rears, or buy a complete unit from him outright.

I would replace your fuel pump with a Carter M4009. It has a canister filter that filters down to 10 microns and was used by Ford on the 65's, but discontinued after that for cost. This would preclude the need for the filter you have between the pump and carb and you could run a steel line from the pump to your carb. Much cleaner look and less chance for heat soak. kip

yea the pump I ordered is the M4009, I do have a steel line up to the in-line filter it’s just sheathed. But now that you mention it, I guess I can get rid of the in-line filter.

Here is a complete 8" rear overhaul kit from Summit Racing that I've used (comes with Timken brand bearings) at a fair price:

Ratech 3007KT Ratech Deluxe Ring and Pinion Installation Kits | Summit Racing

Besides the normal setup stuff, it also included axle bearings and the axle seals.

Note that if you install a Yukon carrier (like a traction loc), it will require larger carrier bearings than what comes in a standard 8" kit.

Awesome thank you Dennis. That seems to be a much better deal for what I’m trying to do.

I'll chime in and add another + for Alan at 8and9inch - I bought mine through them, before TJ's passing, and have had no issues whatsoever. Changed from the stock one wheel peel to a 3.55 True-Trac.

Double lines are cool!!

BTW, if you do change out your rear end, you'll have to consider changing your forum name too. :p

Not sure if Alan still does it but TJ offered a discount from his ebay pricing by contacting him directly.

I know it seems weird to order auto parts off Amazon, but here’s the kit I used last fall- $80.
The CJ kit doesn’t say what make bearings it has in it, but this kit was all US-made Timkens. It doesn’t show the the pinion carrier shims or o-ring, but they were both in the kit. It came in Yukon packaging.
