Ist, you need to get #1 cyl. on the compression stroke, take out the plug and rotate or have someone "click the ign. key" to make it easier. when you get there, line up the line on the damper (10 degrees ). Next, the cap should have #1, usually to the left of the clip holding on the cap on the rear. Line up the rotor the the #1 terminal would be and drop it in. You might have to jimmy the engine a little bit to get the oil pump shaft to engage.
BTW, when I do this, I simply get the timing marks to line up and drop the dist. in. If it starts good. If it doesn't and pops throught the carb, I pull the dist, rotate the engine one revolution and then drop it back in. I just happen to think this is easier than pulling out a plug and finding TDC.
