Morning

During my last thread "Will Not Start" great response. A fellow gear head gave me a rebuilt FoMoCo 302 Dist, has less then 20 hrs.

Question: Will it fix my 289 with no trouble?

Yes? Obviously match them up when you pull your old one, but you can at least check to make sure the oil pump pickup is the same beforehand. Our oil pump shafts are 1/4" hex. Beyond that, mark where your rotor is and give it a yank. I've had mine in and out so many times recently that I think I could do it in my sleep. Here's one small trick I learned on some YT show I watched years ago though. If your oil pump pickup flops over to the back and won't let the dizzy drop down, jack up the rear of the car some to get it more willing to stay upright.

Fit, yes. 289 and "old school" 302 distributors interchange. By "old school" I mean pre 1985 when they started putting roller camshafts in 5.0's (which many people call 302's). The distributor gear on a distributor meant for use with a roller lifter camshaft is harder and isn't compatible the earlier style cams.

Plus, of a non-catastrophic nature, is the "rebuilt" question. Rebuilt by whom ? There's a short list, of under 6 more or less, of rebuilders with excellent reputations who are known to the VMF world. Anyone else is not likely to have rebuilt the distributor to specifications that will do you any good. And more likely to cause you a lot of grief.

So if you don't know who did the work on it I'd just send it to distributor Dan N. for the right care.
He can also put the right gear on it if that's needed.

It's just point of personal reference for me. I recall when Ford transitioned from SAE to metric and it was about the same time they changed the imbalance of the small Windsor cranks to 50 ounces. So I like to think of the earlier engines as 302's and the later as 5.0's. Same with the rest, vintage engines just sound cooler when referenced to in cubic inches if you ask me. Nobody says "Boss 7.03" or "Boss 5.0". According to parts store listings, SAE engines apparently no longer exist, a side oil 427, Cobrajet 428, and even Hemi 426's and 440 Wedges are all just "7 liter" engines. Technically correct but with just no style at all.
