Double Din Install in Dash

I want to put a double din touch screen in my 1966 fastback, I saw one forum where a guy did it but there isn't very much info. If anyone has done this please give me tips, I'm open to ideas too, thanks.

My idea is to skip any DIN and use a magnetic phone mount in place of the stereo. In my case, I have a little amp in the console for volume control and Bluetooth module.

I made a steel plate to cover the radio opening and filled it, but it’s entirely reversible. Put a hard drive magnet behind it and covered the dash in vinyl fabric and have a spare phone case with a strip of steel epoxied to it.

I'd think it'd be a matter of starting with something like the item below, cutting the dash to fit, and blending it in, whether you want to try and place it "proud" to the dash and fill the sides to match the contour or recess the plate and fill the sides AND the top.

I haven't seen one like that before, do you think something like what I have linked below will work? I want it to look good, I have experience with welding and fabrication but just not as something as scary as a dash lol.
Before you mutilate yet another classic Mustang dash...why do you want a touchscreen? There may well be a cleaner way to accomplish what you want like @BlakeTX did. If you want GPS I would instead suggest going with a HUD unit that you could mount in the speaker grill that would reflect off the windshield. If its a phone interface you are after, you could simply buy one of the many bluetooth capable radios on the market. I know Tesla has made people think cheap $80 tablets glued to the dash are cool...but as far as classic mustangs go they look pretty terrible(in reality, they look terrible in any car, but especially classic mustangs).

Now that I have expressed my completely unsolicited opinion...if I had to install a touch screen, it would never be in the dash...far better to install it in a console where it can be undone fairly easily:

If you don't have a console yet, its a perfect time to make one to your specs for the cleanest looking install.

If I were to install a touch screen in the dash, it would have to be something with a flex screen that actually fit the curve of the dash. As far as I know there is no such thing on the market yet, even though they have the tech.

P.S. I was wrong...Ali express does sell felxible OLED screens, but unless you are an electronics guy it would be hard to make that communicate with a head unit.

A lot of our dashes are already mutilated by pimple faced 17yr olds who wanted the latest fancy cassette deck.

Mine looks an ape with a chisel went at it.

 Sometimes I feel lucky that my car was last on the road in 1977.

Seeing that picture with the console may have actually changed my mind. I want ac for the car as well so I could fabricate the vents like that as well. Also not having cupholders right now sucks since I drive this car to college, which is why I want a display. I use maps pretty often since I'm usually somewhere I haven't been. I also feel thankful my dash isn't cut up like swooshdaves. Thanks for that information! My hurst shifter will look nice on that console lol.
This is my currently what I have. Car is unrestored currently, I'm doing all of the major mods I want to do to it now so I don't mess up my paint or interior later.

I did something like this in my first 66, but it was a single din...
Just another opinion but I just don’t like the radio in the dash. My plan was to place the center AC vents there.

Below is my homemade console for my 65 with double DIN

Thank you,
I used 1/2 inch PVC board. Wasn’t bad but time consuming. I did have a professional cover it for me.

Plus the radio area looks very sanitary.
If you want to get crazy, there are flexible screens on AliExpress that are HDMI so you could plug them into a Raspberry Pi.

Google tells me there are options to run CarPlay or Android Auto on the Pi, so you could in theory have a screen that contours to the dash even better than what you see in new cars.

It'd probably be some work to pull it off, but that would look pretty cool if you made it work.
This is my double-din in my 65 Fastback that I did back in 2018.

Best one yet without cutting dash or making new console.
