I did something similar but ended up not using a head unit but a tablet instead. The PO of my car had cut a giant opening for a 1.5 din stereo. So I had to fix the metal either way, thus I decided to take the opportunity to make it what I really wanted. Im happy with it.

When I said earlier that new tech never blends in with old tech obviously I had forgotten all about Ryan's tablet. All bow to the master. :)

Did you read that lock smith link from the other thread? I'm not positive you're have a dialog with an English speaking person.
Yes. And this person (from India) is showing every sign of being yet another spammer trying to sneak in. We're just waiting for the link to whatever they are pimping. Ban button at the ready.

That looks super cool. I was gonna have a i pad mini pop out of the dash like a navigation screen but there’s not enough room to the windshield

Wanted to post an update....

Got the head unit installed finally. It is a TIGHT fit, but, it fits! I had a close clearance issue with the 4x10 speaker in the dash, there is maybe an 1/8" clearance from the top of the head unit to the bottom of the speaker magnet, but it doesn't hit and that's what matters! I am gonna try out using the center speaker in conjunction with the two 4x6 door speakers to get a better sound field. We'll see how it goes...

There will be five poopy speakers; two 6x9’s in the rear package tray as well. I’m just excited I will be able to hear this stereo over the engine/exhaust noise compared to my 67. 😉

Which reminds me... I have an extra 4x10 speaker if anyone is interested. It’s a standard coaxial 4 ohm affair, single voice coil. Maybe when I can confirm the success of my center channel experiment it might be an easier sell...😁

It’s hard to tell from the pics, but how did you handle that transition from the curve of the dash to the squared off head unit? What materials did you use?
I don’t seem to have the picture that shows it, but after cutting the large hole in the dash I inserted a flat steel piece on the left and right sides of the head unit hole. Those pieces were then welded to the metal dash (I had to weld and do metal repair on the dash where it was torn up beyond the opening). Those pieces are flush to the dash at the top and bottom, and behind the dash the pieces have holes drilled in them so I can screw the head unit directly to the brackets.

I will see if I can find the pic tonight and I will post it.

I had a slightly hacked hole in my dash from a PO putting in a newer single din stereo. I decided to make it an easy fix at the time (no welder on hand) so I put in a radio delete panel, and then added a double din touch screen to a center console. It was made to take one, stereo is easy to reach and use, and sits at a good angle to see it. Bonus is the cup holders.

Now five poopy speakers I can go for. I learned years ago that our cars were very audio limited up front so might as well get used to all the good noise coming mostly from the back.

That's a nice clean looking install, kiwinz. Got any larger non-thumbnail pictures?

Thanks Gypsy. Lets see if these images upload better. I seem to have issues getting the right file size to be able to upload without them being small. Also can't stop some of them from rotating. Let me know any tricks to uploading images - I searched the forum and cant find them. And photo bucket has left lots of posts missing the valuable photos!

This came with the dash cover and supporting brackets ripped off, so I smoothed it and called it good. A little rattle can action for paint and its looking ok. I have a matching tach and a size gauge bezel coming to finally move the tach into the dash.

Sweet! The console is growing on me too. Many folks make their own but they tend to be slab-sided and as there are hardly any straight lines inside our cars those curves make it look much more at home than most of those. Whether you made it or bought it, it looks good.

I just snap pics on my phone and transfer them to a PC then upload them to Postimages.org. Then when I need them I just link to them, whatever size they happen to be. People with slower connections may not be terribly happy about that though. I've noticed the pictures I took a few years back that were transferred over from Photobucket are smaller, about half the size. Ones from my newer phone put on Postimage transfer the size of the first picture. Older ones the second picture. I never messed with the sizes. Ain't nobody got time for that.

Ryan's is sooo good. Really considering attempting to do something similar in my console that will play FLAC or similar files from internal or external memory and transition from digital to analog connections back to an amp. It won't be expertly hidden as his is though I know my limitations heh. I don't really want to mess with my phone to change songs etc. Waiting for current tech to get cheap :) Maybe audio in 2 years or so based on my current rate of movement lol.
