I am looking to replace my worn-out shocks with some more suited for drag racing. Now this is still a street car, so I need to be able to drive it around ..so I guess I am seeking advice on the best type/prices. I have been told that 70\30 up front and 50\50 in rear is about what I want. Can anyone elaborate on just what these numbers mean? Also, where is the best place to buy these?

I don't know the technical explanation but the x/y rate has to do with how quickly the shock extends versus how quickly it contracts or rebounds back. A 90/10(70/30 60/40) shock will extend more quickly than it rebounds. This is great for drag racing because it lets your front end lift up quickly for weight transfer and then settle down slowly so you don't slam the front end down on the track. Drag shocks on the back are compress a little easier and extend more slowly.

In general, I don't think drag shocks are as stiff as a set of good gas charged street shocks. They will be a bit unpleasant on your car if you drive it on the street. The front end will have a tendency to lift and the rear will have a tendency to squat every time you hit a bump because the shocks think you are launching the car. In general, it will make the front end feel a little loose. Imagine it bouncing like that in the middle of a hard cornering maneuver. It could be dangerous.

I got my 3 way adjustable Competition Engineering drag shocks from Summit Racing Equipment. Drag shocks are not street legal if they decide to look closely at them during a vehicle inspection.

I had a pair of Cure-Ride 90/10 uplocks on a 72 that I raced. Loved them on the dragstrip, rough as he_ _ on the street. I think Cure-Rides are still avalable from PST.

The numbers mean 90% of the dampening on compresssion, 10% on extension.
