Out of a 176 transactions, I have one negative feedback for refusing to pay $10 shipping for a $8 cigarette lighter that was being shipped within my same state. It wasn't the money, it was the principle of someone trying to rip me off.

Now, I have just bought a new repop gas tank for $72 from a guy who lives 15 minutes from me. I requested that I be able to pick the tank up from him & he stated that he will only ship it for $22 & that I cannot pick it up. I have bought many local items off of ehay before without a problem in me picking them up. I only bid on this item, because I new I wouldn't have to pay for shipping. I can see where this is going...Another negative feedback...Am I out of line?

You should use the "Ask a Seller a Question" feature before you ever bid on anything to determine shipping. Figure out the max price you want to pay, subtract the seller's shipping quote, and only then put that amount into a snipe engine.

On this particular transaction I would call the seller and ask how much of a premium he would charge to let you pick it up. If he is charging $22 shipping, UPS may only be charging him $15. Tell him you'll pay the extra seven dollars to save the $15. Stress to him that this way he won't have to pack the item or use up his time to drop it off. He just might go for it.

However, he might not. It may be that the seller doesn't want to deal with a face to face transaction - that may be why he sold the item on e(b)ay in the first place. Or he may have an odd schedule that will require him to take a lot of time out of his normal routine to meet a buyer for pick-up.

If you don't want to offer a premium, or the seller refuses to let you pick up the item, AND you don't want to pay $22, then reneg on the transaction and take your negative feedback like a man.

I hear ya, I had bought a kickpanel from a guy for 10 bucks, later to find out the guy lives on my way home - I email him and ask if I can pick it up and he says "dude, youd be cutting into my lucrative shipping business".. I did get him to agree to pick it up, and pay him 8 bucks! I hate that site, and most of the people I have dealt with on there... I love it when they say "Actual Shipping and Handling..." - the shipping can be quantified, but the sellers can add whatever they want for handling.....

I do agree that it's pretty poor practice to try to scam extra cash off of shipping. However, like JSHarvey said, unless the shipping is stated always ask for approx S&H cost before you bid. I wouldn't question a few dollars difference, but you need to kmnow what you're getting into before you bid.

I sell quite a bit on ehay and I can see your point. I clearly state my shipping costs(I have a 30 min. drive just to ship) but,if I sell to someone willing to come pick it up then by all means let them. although I am getting a little leary of letting people come to my place(some of the people have been a little too interested in seeing the inside of the shop and/or storage) and that may be why he doesn't want you to pick it up. you might ask him to meet you at a McDonalds or something and offer to pay him for his time. you can't really get too mad as you didn't ask him prior to bidding if he would let you pick it up. for you its now just a judgement call and how much you want it, and whether the "principal" is more important than getting the part? once again NOT advocating his policy but it'd be easier to just ckaulk it up to learning and go on with life, IMO.

many people sell things with high S/H as that is where they get the real profit.

But there are also a LOT of people that sell stuff drop shipped. That is where they sell an item they don't own and have the supplier ship it directly to you. Therefore they dont have one for you to pick you.

I'm more than willing to work it out with him & accomodate him. It took 3 emails for him to respond & when he did , it was short & abrupt. I also have sold many items on ehay, but I am quite sensitive to buyers, & like you, I try & be honest & fair. I ship for exactly what it costs & never charge a bogus handling charge.

you know james there has a good point that I hadn't thought of, he may be selling items that are being drop shipped from another location. then again he could just be a jerk. I try to charge a fair shipping cost and sometimes a make a little and alot of the time I don't. whatever "extra" I make is to offset the time and distance I have to drive to ship it. if he is unwilling to communicate you might try the arbitration service through eHay. explain your point and see if it helps.
I'm on your side, I really am but we don't really know the sellers side of things yet do we ?
I have 3 negs, one from an impatient jerk that got his part the day AFTER he left it, one from "pornstar3000" because he is a self important a$$hole and one from a guy in holland that got upset when a $6 fan spacer was gonna cost $26.00 priority to ship OVERSEAS!

When I sell something, I loosely package it, weight it, and then in my description, give the weight, size of the box, and my zip. And tell the end person to do their own calculations.

That way its totally fair (no profit), and I avoid a bunch of "What is the shipping to zip XXXXX?".

And, I tell them , to use paypal, they have to pay the service charge, else I'll gladly take a money order.

Thats my system. The trip to ups or the postoffice is like 15 mintues, so I just suck that part up.

..

If the shipping is bloated on an item, then I adjust my bid accordingly. But it does peeve me off when I pay $20 for shipping, and the box it comes in .. is labled "$8.33" or something like that.

i've dealt with this before myself and learned its always best to email first and ask if you can pick up .. some people sell out of their house and just dont want strangers around there family, i can understand that, but you need to know in advance right ...

also, there are so many people trying to make money off of shipping, being a former shipping mananger i can spot it pretty quick and always ask up front before bidding .. dont let a low reserve price fool you, always get that shipping cost first ...

BTW, there are eBa(y) selling policies that specifically prohibit adding extra fees in order to take particular payment services. You need to build this fee into your general shipping/handling charge for all payment types, or not charge it for anyone.

Ask for receipt which shows breakdown of cost, including itemized shipping and handleing costs. If the shipping does not match, ask for refund, otherwise this is not likely recorded as income and we can all start forwarding copies of the receipts to the IRS so the can get unclaimed taxes. Handling is the sellers cost for their "labor".

Well, I emailed the seller again & stated if he wasn't willing to work something out or give a explanation, I would pass on the purchase & that I am willing to take the negative feedback hit from him, as he should from me. He now politely emailed me back & stated that he would be willing to meet me at the Pomona Swap Meet on 8/24 to consumate the deal. Interestingly enough, he started out firm & somewhat rude, but now he's willing to make it happen.

I always meet in a local supermarket parking lot for parts swaps. A suggestion if he doesn't want you to know the home address.

Too bad egay will not enforce their own rules. One day it will catch up to them. I hope the CC companies gang up on them and Kick their a$$. If you make a rule, enforce it.

They will (sort of) if you bring it to their attention. It would take an INCREDIBLE amount of manpower to check every auction and make sure that no one is asking for extra funds for things like CC purchases, or charging unreasonable shipping fees, etc.

I said "sort of" above because there's a basic conflict of interest between enforcing their own rules and discouraging people selling items. This applies twice over to PayPal, which is owned by eBa(y) now. They have a nasty habit of warnings followed by very temporary bannings if the problem persists.

What really ticks me off are some of the JERKS on this site that respond to my for sale ads. They ask for a shipping quote, so I truck on down the P.O. or courier, get a quote, tell them the cost(cheap most times), only to have them go silent as they've found a similar item on Ehay or are just fishing. I guess perhaps I should save the downtown trip and just give them a safe(higher) shipping cost. Saves me gas and the headache. It happens all the time. ::

There are always 2 sides to every story. Although $10 shipping for a $8 lighter may seem excessive, UPS charges approx. $4 to ship within the same zone. There is the cost of the box and packaging material, then having to run to the UPS depot or Post Office to ship. I don't know about anyone else, but my time has SOME value to it.

On the other hand, if I had something to sell on e-hay like that, I'd probably price it at $18 shipped anywhere in the US, and $10 if you pick it up.

Then again, some folks don't want personal interaction with the buyer so they ship only.

Personally, I only use e-hay as a source of entertainment.
