It has been couple of years since I first posted the Electric Steering idea. My car has progressed far enough and I was ready for it as well so I though I would share the direction I went.

Couple of months ago, I was at my location pic-a-part and ran into a 2010 Toyota Corolla and a 2009 Toyota Prius and I pulled both of them and took a risk. To my amazement, both of these worked on the bench with only the Ignition On, heavy gauge Power and Ground. That's it! 3 wire connection. After further digging and finding the service manuals, I found that these units go in to a Fail-Safe mode and provide steering effort that is just about right when the CAN BUS not present in about 10 seconds. No eBay module needed!

I was not done. I pulled a 2014 Kia Soul EPS, a 2010 Nissan Cube and a 2008 Nissan Versa and all worked in a Fail-Safe mode and without the eBay module. I also pulled a 2007 Toyota Yaris that also works in fail safe mode but requires a VSS signal.

The biggest advantage is obviously they all work in fail safe mode but also they have a remotely mounted ECU that can be unplugged. It's important to get the ECU when pulling the Electric Steering Column.

My testing leads me to believe that just about any Japanese car brand with Electric Steering works in Fail-Safe mode. I did test the Chevy Cobalt and does not work in Fail-Safe just like Saturn Vue even though they are all made by Koyo. For me, I would trust any EPS working in Fail-Safe mode as intended by the manufacture over adding external non-factory module. Lots of testing and development goes on in to these systems.

Below is the list of Car that I know of that has Fail-Safe Electric Steering:

2004-2009 Toyota Prius
2009-2013 Toyota Corolla
2006-2011 Toyota Yaris - (With ABS works in Fail-Safe).
2006-2011 Toyota Yaris - (Non-ABS needs VSS signal or flashing LED)
2007-2009 Nissan Versa
2009-2012 Nissan Cube
2012-2014 Kia Soul

I will be updating this list as I find more information.

Well, done sir. Looking forward to all the information you can give. I hate my Borgeson and look forward to an alternative to replace it.

Sorry for the perhaps ignorant question but which ECU do you need to get? The one for the car? Or is there a separate one that specifically controls the EPAS.

I am literally shopping on Ebay right now and none of the prius columns I am seeing seem to come with any sort of control box that I can tell.

In your opinion which column would be the best donor for a 1968 style collapsible column? And for an earlier long-shaft column?
I'm not real clear on what all would need to be done to retain the stock look and fit of the upper column on '65-68 cars either. Lots of info presented though, perhaps I'm overlooking some. I freely admit to being a video how-to hater, so tend to fast forward through them with the sound muted when I just have to watch one.

Well this is awesome. Based on your experimentation, are there any that look to be a better solution from a packaging standpoint? I know things can be tight for the 65-66 guys.

Note: The Prius & Yaris Steering ECU are interchangeable. Since Prius is the best selling Hybrid and Corolla is the best selling car in its class, they are easy to find. Also the output shaft is little bigger and therefore the Borgeson 312500, 11/16 36 X 3/4 smooth bore Weld On fits nicely over the Prius/Yaris/Corolla EPS. It fit's little loose on Saturn Vue EPS.

If you have a steering box, the Prius/Corolla EPS with Borgeson 312500 is best bet.

For EPS use Prius/Corolla EPS. They are easy to find.

Early Spear Column - Cut the long shaft and belt on Borgeson 312500 to mate with output shaft of EPS. This is a coupler 11/16-36 spline X 3/4 Smooth Bore

1968 style collapsible column, use the Prius lower adapter which has OD of 0.750". Cut the Mustangs original lower shaft which has ID of 0.760" and slide over the Prius adapter and weld.

Measure twice maybe three times before you cut!

The best option to maintain collapsible steering is to use Male/Female Double D shafts. This is my next iteration. I found that 1983–1988 Thunder Bird had this type of shaft from the factory. I took the a Toyota Rack and Pinion extension/adapter that is similar to Prius and machined Double D flats on it. This now slides in to the Female part of the Double D shaft and the male shaft sticks out of the firewall for my Rack and Pinion.

Is there any issues with removing a rag joint / rubber coupler and replacing it with a solid fitting or u joint besides possible vibration?

So, I'm a little late to all this but are you saying that with the appropriate ecu and fail safe it provides the correct amount of steering assist without the need for a controller?

If you still have the long spear steering shaft, it's best to cut it up high and use Use Borgeson 312500, 11/16-36 Splines X 3/4 smooth bore weld coupling. Just weld to steering box shaft. I could not do it this way because I cut my steering at low point long time ago. This will also support the EPS as well. Then all you need is the half round strap mount to support the upper tube. Also a simple bracket is needed for anti-torque to keep the motor from moving. Nothing big.
