I am planning on pulling the engine for a rebuild this spring and also detail the engine bay. As you can see by the pic the block is black and the air cleaner and valve covers are gold, but on closer inspection and after bead blasting the air cleaner it is obvious that the original color was blue. I know that the engine is original to the car and the build date is
May 18 1965- Dearborn assembly plant. Is this early enough to still be blue? If so what is the correct blue?
Thanks

According to the "Mustang Restoration Handbook" by Don
Taylor and Tom Wilson, the 289 had a black block and heads.
The valve covers were gold along with the air cleaner. They
also note that the air intake on the air cleaner was flat black.
You may get some definite info from Jeff Speegle on this forum. He is the one that can confirm this info.

The air cleaner in your picture is the wrong air cleaner for your car if you have a May 65 build date. That is a fairly late 65 model car which should have a gold air cleaner housing and lid with black snorkel. The air cleaner in your picture, if it was used on Mustangs, was used on some 64 1/2 models. I'm familiar with that air cleaner on falcons and fairlanes, but I think it was used on some early Mustangs. You need the air cleaner used on 65 and 66 Mustangs.

I think the other guys are right. That is not the style of air cleaner on my 65 which I feel is original.
