Has anyone attempted to do an engine swap on a modern car that is required by your state to have an emissions inspection? I can't seem to find anything about it here in Pennsylvania. The state website is a mess, local garages aren't sure, and I don't even know who I would attempt to call to try to get an answer on it. With wrecked Mustangs becoming (more) common, I've been toying with the idea of putting a Coyote and 6-speed in a Ranger, but I don't want to go through the trouble if I can't drive it on the street.

I have not gotten involved with that, however, I just seen the following note on the Ford Racing web site. It applies to many of their crate engines and was not there earlier this year. Looks like a just CYA comment for them.

The only one that can answer that would be the PA DMV, enforcement varies allot by state. CA actually has inspection referees you can consult, most states are not that accommodating. You can find the Federal regs online, which say basically the same model year or newer, with all emission equipment, and from the same class of vehicle. For practical purposes that means it has to be from the same Mfg.

Finding a '53-'56 F-100 is looking better all the time. Completely avoids all of that legal mess…
Yeah, I know what you mean! I'm having the same debate with my '89 Toyota 4x4, They just dropped it from inspections, but if I do an illegal swap, it still may be an issue if I move or they reinstate inspections.
