I have some lifter noise. Is this normal? Is there any way to quiet them down short of a rebuild? Maybe an additive?
Have you adjusted the lifters? There are several procedures for adjusting them, some with the engine OFF and some with the engine ON.
There are plenty of snake oil additives you can add to the oil to quiet them but snake oil won't work if they're not adjusted correctly.

I have adjusted them cold (engine off). I went to TDC on each cylinder, checked the push rod for any clearance by hand, wrenched out any clearance but still able to turn push rod by hand with effort, and then tightened rocker arm nut 1/4 of a turn down.

The lifter noise is not bad, just slightly audible, but I expected a fairly quiet operation. This engine has a lot of miles. Maybe the noise is normal.
