Friday night i'm coming back from a car show and bingo.. my alt light comes on..
As soon as I get home I pull the neg terminal off and it dies.
OK... new alternator Saturday morning. The lights never varied in brightness...so I figured the regulator was OK.
I get to AutoZone which I was surprised had one and pick up a new alternator and just have him check the old one just in case. There machine says it's good.

Hmmmmmm...

The guy says I can return the new one if I choose to keep the old one and find another problem.
I install the new alternator and start the car. Alt light still on.
I pull the neg battery cable off and the car still runs.
Now is where it gets weird... When I put the neg cable back on to the battery.. I got a big spark and my right front turning signal bulb flashed like a camera bulb and burned out.
The alt light is still off and I replaced the amber 1157 with a new one and all's well.

Enter this one in the "Book Of Weird Electrical Problems"...

Thanks for the tip..

I always understood the way to check an alternator on these oldies is to pull the neg terminal off and see if it still runs.

Oh...The light still works.. turns on when I flip the key before it starts.

Sounds like your problem is somewhere in the dash wiring, not the charging system...

I wouldn't rule out the regulator just yet.
