While removing the rear spoiler fin, to repair some PO work, the bolt broke. No sweat just drill it and retap..... RIGHT

As you can see the tap broke. There is only two turns in the hole.

Does anyone have an easy solution?? Does anyone have a replacement fin tower??

I do not like to admit to breaking a tap but have on a few occasions. What I usually end up doing is using a punch to break up the broke off piece and then pick out the pieces. Usually the material is much harder then the stauncheon material (pot metal)so be carefull how hard you strike the broken tap piece. There is a tool that is made just for removing the broken tap, it has four fingers that slip into the 4 floots in the tap and then you unscrew it but I have had limited success with it. hope this helps, John

It would be a shame to have passed the test but to have missed the lesson.

When using a tap use thread cutting fluid for the type of material being threaded. Always go a quarter turn at a time then back out to break the chips. And always buy high quality taps
Looks like its machine shop time.

Layne,

That looks pretty nasty. rather then try screwing around with it, that pedestal mount you have there is a repop and not an original (the originals are hollow). You should be able to pick up a single pedestal fairly reasonable from one of the many vendors. You may end up cracking the pedestal as they are made of a very low grade aluminum alloy. If you can't find a vendor who will sell you a single, let me know and I'll dig through my stuff as a may have some singles laying around. BTW, which side???

While retapping the water neck bolt holes on my 87 Aerostar last fall, i was just finishing up the second hole, I was going to stop after that last 1/4 turn, but then it snaped off. I took a speedy cut in a dreamal (SP?) tool, and mad a notch in the top of the tap, then backed it out like a screw. Of course that was only after a cursing fit that brought my wife up out of the den to the garage, she thought I'd droped the van on myself.
