Ok, I'm curious, who gets the best gas mileage out of their classic mustang? Please post your MPG (if you know it, approximately) and your Year/Model/Engine/Tranny/Rear Gear Ratio.

I'm way curious over here.

We ran the car to LA and back twice. 351C, toploader, 3.50 gears. We got
14mph average. We burn 5 gal. in 10 laps at Laguna Seca. That's about
4.46 per gal. BUT IT'S A LOT MORE FUN!!!!!

It's not a Windsor!http://home.earthlink.net/~myradpc/_uimages/turn3.JPG

Best- original/unrestored 65 convertible, A code, 4 speed, 3.25 = 24 mpg

Worst - 68 coupe - 429, automatic, 5.30 gears :)

This car ended up being sold backl to Ford in the mid 80's as a give-away car for one of their promotions

My 1966 Mustang Coupe, stone-stock 289-2V, C-4, 2.80 axle and single exhaust averaged 14mpg when I got it. Adding a set of dual exhaust glasspaks instantly raised it to 17mpg. This same car, at 70mph, with the AC on and two people in the car, would get 20-21mpg on the highway.

65 stock 289 K fastback 3:50, 4speed. 11-12 town, 16 mpg freeway at 70 mph.

65 convert. 302, Holley 600. Auto, 3:20. 10-11 town. 17 freeway at 60-65.

I'm confidant with exhaust gas analyzer/dyno tuning at least 5 mpg or more could be added to both of them at freeway speeds.

Slightly warmed over '66 289 +0.030 Coupe, std C4, stock single exhaust, 3.25:1 rear (posi). About 16mpg all-around driving (commuting to/from work, 20 mile each way, most of that on freeway).

Much better than SWMBO's '96 454 Suburban - 12 mpg highway!!

I fully expect a dyno tune to help, since I've never figured out how to tune the secondaries properly on my Edelbrock 1406 carb (I can see small amounts of smoke when I stomp on it). Am also glad to know dual exhausts help the mpg. Decided not to switch to AOD tranny.

Thanks,

Mike

The only time I've ever calculated it was after taking my '66 to a 49er game in San Fran.

Averaged about 25mpg

289 w/302 heads mild cam (at the time), Performer intake and carb, Pertronix ignition and MSD-6AL, underdrive pullies, JBA shortie headers with 2 1/4 duals, C4 tranny and 3.0 rear.

15 city 22 highway
289 2V stock everything exept Petronix installed.

Can anyone tell me how to make it better? I recently rebuilt the carb, changed cap, rotor, wires. Plugs look new. 73K original miles.

Before all of that I was getting around 12 so I was happy until reading here that I can do better.

There's still a slight miss at idle but besides that the car runs great. What's the next phase of things i should be looking at to bump it up a couple more MPGs?
