grabbing brakes

I recently bought a 68 289 convertible with power drum brakes. When I hit the brakes they only grab slightly. As I push on them some more, they all of a sudden REALLY grab. What I'm saying is that the braking is not smooth. Any thoughts. Thanks, Mark

All you can do is make sure each wheel is adjusted equally and all the air bled out. If there's still a problem visually inspect them. I'd just look at them first anyway, then bleed and adjust, or replace them all together since you really don't know their history.

Brakes are very basic. It takes a visual inspection, if you are not capable, then have them looked at. Leaking wheel cylinders will cause the brakes to grab, as wil a leaking axle seal. Both cases make the shoes soaked and they act funny when like that /forums/images/icons/blush.gif)
