I have a 63 289 that was taken out of a 63 Fairlane years ago. I recently separated the transmission from the engine and noticed two florecent green paint marks on the back of the block behind the flex plate. Does anyone know what the paint marks mean? I've heard in the past that orange paint marks denote a hipo block. Any info would be appreciated.

I may be wrong... but Fords small block in '63 was a 260.... the 289's didn't come out until '65 (you can confirm block date by looking at casting id's located in the lifter valley beneath the intake manifold.

As for the green paint... it could be a yard mark of some sort and could be from a previous swap you don't know about.

63 was the first year of the 289, and the Hipo as well.
