But not in a way I've ever seen before. I was leaving Lowes and got on it a bit, running up to 40 in 1st, then, boom, this happened. The pump is a little over 1 year old, I run a/c which was on, and an Eaton pump with a 140 amp alt. The a/c isn't involved with the wp pulley of course, but I do have a 6 blade mechanical fan, which seems to move a fair bit of air especially at higher revs. Looks to me like a casting defect. Any other theories?

The bearing appears to be fine. I.E. it spins with not much effort. What resistance there is seems reasonable considering the snout is likely deformed now.

Stock pulley setup or some sort of self tensioning setup? How tight were the belts if manually adjusted? What brand of pump? Appears aluminum. Seems like there was another thread within the last couple months with a similar failure.

Stock pulley setup, maybe a little on the tight side of the alt to prevent squealing (140 AMP) offset somewhat by the Eaton ps pump pulling the other way. Pump was an aluminum Cardone Select, cheap, maybe too cheap.

Nothing else was hurt with the exception of the wp pulley. Grooves got cut in it from the balancer but no radiator contact. The pulley will be replaced. I was fortunate.

I agree but isn't the second picture a cast iron with backing plate? I haven't found a cast iron wp that will fit in where the aluminum one is supposed to be installed. Are there better aluminum wp available at 'reasonable ' costs?

I'm using the same Chinese water pump on my 65. They are all same pump from the same casting regardless of what it says on the box.

The one linked the above post is cast with a backing plate and will not work.

The gates pump https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=948984&cc=1333381&jsn=482&jsn=482 looks interesting. Has the cast iron impeller instead of stamped steel one the china pumps have.

Now that I've seen your pump fail I have something else to worry about at next Sunday's autocross when turning 6200rpm.

Severy weeks ago mine failed very similarly. It was a parts store water pump that I got from Advance Auto about a year and a half ago. The pump impeller actually rubbed on the timing cover. The noise it made when the part of the housing broke off was crazy. Sounded like a gun going off in my engine compartment.

I run that style pump 30k ish on my old 289 and then transplanted for several more thousand on the "new GT40P with out issue ,actually developed a small drip one winter but "fixed" itself :shrug: No real load on it though, no fan just an alternator

Look at the failure face. If it is uniformly rough and looks like sand, then it was probably an instantaneous failure. If you see a portion that looks burnished / smooth, it is probable that it started failing there. A crack starts, then the flexure "hammers" the cracked surface so that it gets smooth. This continues as the crack slowly opens, burnishing that surface until ultimate failure occurs. You'll see a smooth / hammered surface next to the rough instantaneous failure surface.

If you learn that it cracked and then over time propagated, then look at the casting at the smooth area to see if there are any voids or other defects. I'd suspect that an instantaneous failure with no crack propagation is a design defect- it is just too thin in a critical area.

No, early car. $230 is a bunch for a water pump but far cheaper than the possible carnage from a failure!

That one is a much better pump, the impeller will work much better as well. I ordered a similar one from Bosch about 12 years ago and it is still working well.

For $230 you could change out your timing chain cover to accept the cast iron water pump and have a larger selection of pumps available to you. Not sure how much originality means to you, though. Personally, someone changed out my timing chain cover to the same one you have (on a 66) so I'm running that same aluminum pump. C'est la vie... I'll change my timing chain cover to the later style as soon as I have a need to, though.
