FWIW, the reason that I don't have Hagerty - despite their stellar reputation - is when I spoke to their reps about my driving habits, and really pinned them down over it, the answer was, "we can't guarantee that we would cover outside of reasonable pleasure use". I asked if I could drive the car to work three days a week, and was told no, then it counts as a daily driver. Now, I don't know how they would verify that I had only driven my car one or two days a week if something were to happen, so I suspect that I would be covered in that instance anyways. But, that's not a game I really want to play with a $50,000+ irreplaceable car.

Incidentally, even if I wanted their insurance, they wouldn't give it to me. Said I drive too many miles, go to many places, use it too frequently as a daily. I've got a completely clean driving record, not in a high-risk group or anything like that. I have called many, many times over the past decade and the answer is always the same. Funny enough, for a while they were using a picture of Jane on their website cost valuation tool... I pointed that out and they STILL said I couldn't have their insurance 😂 Bastards

"I was driving to a car show when I got in the accident".

"1000 miles from home?"

"Yes"
I ran this exact scenario past multiple reps and all of them were like, "nooooooo" lol

Yea they seem to want the careful person who drives it 5 times a year and sends odometer pictures for verification while also living in a low accident rate area. I had a similar experience to yours. They wanted proof that the car was parked in an enclosed garage and after I sent them a picture of it tucked away in my garage they still declined to offer me a plan. So I went to AAA instead and not only got full comprehension for all my vehicles including motorcycles, but at a discounted rate because they bundled it. I eventually got a slightly better deal through State Farm but both have been great.

This thread inspired me yesterday to go out and drive my 65 to the gas station. Sure I could have driven to a closer one, but I went to one 15 miles away for my pleasure drive!

AZ, if you aren't seeing stories of claims denied, coverage not offered, you aren't looking very hard. They're everywhere. Back more than 10 yrs ago, when I was still shopping for 'classic' insurance, I had a list of 20 questions that I asked the folks at UNDERWRITING, what you agent tells you is actually meaningless. Its the folks in the underwriting dept, which in Hagerty's case usually means Essentia, because Hagerty is merely a shill, that make the choice of whats offered. And the classic companies only offered exceptionally restrictive policies, and wanted top dollar for them to boot. I can't understand why anyone would bother. Not a good value at all. LSG

I wonder how Hagerty would view a Hot Rod Power Tour, or Cars & Cones?
I was hoping to take my 66 on the Hot Rod Power Tour last year. Didn’t happen. But I did call Hagerty and tell them what I wanted to do and they said that was fine to drive. And this is from Seattle to Atlanta and back. 8000 miles.

Well no one on this topic has offered an example of a claim being denied from a driving restriction so far. And I haven't seen it in another threads here. How hard should I be looking? 🤷

General question about insurance: Do I need it before I ship my car from Florida to Arizona? My original plan is that I have State Farm and was going to give them a call. Anything in particular I should ask/look out for?

Most of these replies are assuming any damage falls on Haggerty or similar to claim. Yeah, car gets keyed and you don't have the persons info, but a collision where it was another drivers fault (lions share of situations) would their insurance not be responsible? If they don't have collision, don't you have uninsured/under insured driver coverage as a backup with your agency like I do with Haggerty? If not, then that's on you. Lots of conspiracy and what if's w/out specific examples shared.

Show me a claim where you rear ended someone on a weekday on the way to work and Haggerty denied it. Show me an example where someone hit you and Haggery denied it. Someones belt buckle scratched the car at a show (happened to my Charger) and they denied it (they covered mine).

It just like anything else. For the thousands and thousands of paid claims, the only ones that get press are the cases where they aren't covered. Just like skydiving deaths. Never see the successful ones on the news, only the splats. You really think they would be around as long as they have been insuring cars way more expensive than ours if they were here to only take $ and not pay out claims? Come on....

Well generally when you purchase a new car your covered under a grace period until you contact them.

That said I wouldn't mess around with a classic car. I would call your insurance and give them a heads up to make sure.

Also the transport company should have insurance on the cargo. Make sure they do and get their info before hand.

IF you're trading in a vehicle with existing coverage and then it'll be the same coverage so if you trade in a vehicle with just liability insurance that's what you'll get..... NEVER assume when it comes to insurance.

Also, although the carrier may have insurance coverage for the load being carried, I'd never rely simply on that coverage. It may protect you if the carrier is NEGLIGENT, but if the load gets hijacked or blown upside down by a tornado you might find yourself up the proverbial creek...

It doesn't have to be a trade. At least not in my experience. But different people, different policies, I suppose.

We're both 100% in agreement about notifying insurance about the the pirchase and transport though. Usually just a call to your agent with the vehicle info and vin is all the OP should need.

We bought a car last July and the dealer made sure we had full coverage on the trade else they would have sold us a temp comprehensive. I didn’t know until then there was a such thing as new car carry over. We did better and were able to show the new car included on our policy when the deal closed. And a discount for all the driver assist gizmos.

Agreed. I've yet to hear of anyone getting into an accident whether it was their fault or not with Hagerty to have their claim denied or even argued over. I'm assuming most of those that have had an issue with Hagerty, or maybe even other insurance companies or in general, are likely because of a salesperson that didn't know what they're talking about, is new or misinformed, or maybe there are certain restrictions in individual states that apply to them and not others? As mentioned before, has anyone on here with Hagerty ever had their claim denied because the agent said they drove the car too much? And has anyone with Hagerty ever had to take pictures of the odometer each year to prove they drive under xxxx amount of miles per year? If that's the case, I've certainly never had to do that before.
