....

Really haven't gotten into the 302 in my car yet, as I have been tackling things that aren't working, and my engine is perfect. So, I could use a couple pointers as I am trying to get my father's car working.

Note, he always buys American, but wondered in the late 70's and bought an RX-7. It has 50k original miles, always garage kept. This isn't a rotary specific issue, so I think we can figure it out.

Car was sitting from 1989 to 1997, just being turned over. On the road a little for three years (100 miles a year). Sitting from about 2000-2008, occasionally being turned over, or run for three minutes or so. In mid 2008, we changed plugs, wires, drained the gas, cleaned the carb (spray cleaner), cleaned points, oil change, oil filter, fuel filter, new battery, new tires (13's :)), etc. Added some Sea Foam to the new gas to flush things a bit. I am may be wrong, but I believe it has an automatic choke, but you can override it by pulling the lever.

Car starts and runs like a champ. No misses, accelerates fine, and we even drove 20 miles in it with no problems except one. Kind of a big one too. It won't idle below 1400 RPM. Just dies. Doesn't matter if it is warmed up or cold. After warming up and putting the choke in, and if you hold the revs about 1400, it would idle, smoke free for days fine.

My NOVICE thoughts are that the carb is partially clogged from years of chugging the god awful gas we took out last fall. (no rust, just apple juice looking). Or that the coils are going. They are oil filled (I think?), and there is fluid where the spark plug connects like the coil is leaking???. (thin, but greasy and clear).

Does a carb rebuild and a new coil sound about right?

Thanks ahead of time.

(PS - He has bought a yellow 80s Ford Wagon, an Escape, and a Ranger since. :) )

Thank you all. I really really appreciate it. There is a specialist that helped create a local (DC) racing league for these that said he would be happy to rebuild it. (He was giddy to hear about one that is so clean and stock.).

Thanks.

PS - It's a four barrel carb on a 1.2L (or there abouts). Crazy engine.
