So I think I’m reading these right.
These came on my 1968 302.
Replacing them with ProComp aluminum heads with 2.02 valves.
But thought I would ID these.


Just 68/69 Torino 351 heads?
Nothing special, right.
They have been gone through, and never ran, so I’m sure I’ll have no problem selling them.
They do have something interesting... look at this valve seat. Is this common or is the head destroyed?
This motor after rebuilt had never been ran.
Im kind of glad I pulled them to double check.

Factory heads do not have replaceable valve guides. When they wear there are several things that can be done. One of them is drilling out the old guides and installing new ones, either cast iron or bronze. That is damaged. My thought is it’s fine if it’s going on a stock rebuild but for any performance, no. It’s going to adversely effect flow compared to the other intakes. Personally I think the early 351W are well past their prime and over rated. They’re living on their glory days now. The big problem with the 289/302 head is not the intake port but the exhaust port. It’s restrictive even on a 289 in stock form. The 351W Head has a bigger intake port and valve but the exhaust port is exactly the same size and shape as a 289. Despite having a bigger valve, it doesn’t flow any better then a 289 exhaust. Years ago the 351W was the only option besides a 289 head. I think if someone is looking for a cheap SBF head for a little more performance either a GT40 or GT40P head with my choice the GT40P head.

I would be cautious on any head with a 2.02” intake other then a Trick Flow. Generally you’re going to not have clearance with the eye brow reliefs on the piston. The smaller 1.90” is pretty much safe.

Well too late!
I already bought some pro comp aluminum heads to replace the 351s that came with the car.
I was just curious if those heads I pulled off were okay.
Probably going to sell them.

HORRIBLE......
The ports and core shift were probably close to 7/16” off.

Never bolted them on.
Sold them for a $200 loss.
Guy said he thought he could port them enough to make work.

So what heads do you have on the engine? Those 351 heads? The letter O in the engineering number simply means that the Fairlane/Torino group performed the design of the head but those heads were used on every 351W built regardless of what body style it was going into. There are actually very few parts that have a Z (Mustang) in the engineering number.

Actually there is nothing wrong with those Ford heads. As previously stated the original valve guides were reamed in the cast iron of the head. When the guides become worn and allow the valve to wobble the machine shop will ream the cast iron guide out way oversize and install a bronze or steel insert into the head and then ream the insert to the proper size. This is what has been done to at least that one valve guide in your photo. As seen in your photo the oversize reaming of the original guide left it very thin in places and some of the cast iron broke off. Do all of the valve guides have inserts installed in them?
When a "port & polish" job is performed most of the valve guide is ground away flush with the roof of the port so it appears that after this guide insert was installed no porting & polishing was done.

Sold that car, with engine.

That's a typical story when it comes to ProComps.
All it takes is a simple Google search to turn up pages of horror stories about ProComp parts. They're now trying to rebrand themselves as Speedmaster 79 since the Internet never forgets. If you'd like hours of reading fun, Google "procomp msd".
