I soaked my 1970 lower shift boot in mineral spirits to loosen the caked on grime and now the areas that were soaked are hardened. What gives!! Anybody know a way to soften the rubber back up or is it trash??? Oh man!!

You might try some wd-40, thats what i use to degrease rubber parts, it may soften the boot.
