Discussion Starter #1
Went to get in the car yesterday and when I hit the starter, the little gear in there never disengaged. Needless to say when the motor fired the little gear went bye bye after a few seconds. So I put in a new starter and hit the key again and I'm getting the same problem, but even when I turn the key off the starter keeps turning the motor over. I have to unhook the battery to get it to quit. Is there anyway the solenoid could be stuck "open"? Usually when I disconnect/connect the battery there is no spark. Now there is a quite noticable spark when the cable meets the post, like an open circuit somewhere. I have a spare solenoid I'm going to put on tomorrow, but any other ideas in case this isn't the problem?

Solenoid is my first choice.
Sounds like the contacts have welded closed and power is live to the starter regardless of key position.

Solenoid relays are stuck. Hit it with a blunt instrument. If it happens again, replace the solenoid.
