I've pulled both rear axles on my 8" diff and can't seem to get the seals out. They seem to be in there pretty tight. The shop manual shows using a special tool.

I may resort to making something similar, but I was wondering how others have done it.

You can get a seal puller at harbor Freight for LT $10.00. I've used vise grips before just be sure not to gouge the seat.

Hi Tom. Just did this job myself. I got some good advice from the group and used the axle itself to remove the seal. Pull the axle almost all the way out, leaving an inch or so behind the seal. Using the axle as a lever, pry out the old seal. Kinda makes a mess of the old seal, but who cares? Don't forget to clean out the goo in the seal seating area. Good luck!

Search previous posts. Within the last two weeks I described how to make a cheap puller using a washer and a threaded rod that works great.
