Not sure if those of you who are coming up here for HAN saw the news about this. There was already a small riot in downtown Reno on Saturday night due to a misprint of some of the dates for HAN in a California newspaper. There were about 500-600 people who lined the streets in downtown Reno to see the cars cruise....one week too early. Apparently a few California newspapers ran the wrong dates for Hot August Nights, so there were a lot of upset people who came up here on the wrong weekend. Once again...people started going crazy walking over cars, and trying to overturn cars. Many fights broke out.

I don't want to create mass hysteria, only offer some advice from a Reno local. Don't waste your time with cruising in downtown Reno. That seems to be where all of the troublemakers go. Plus the City has yet to prove that they have the events under control. I would advise crusing in downtown Sparks, the Peppermill, and the Reno Hilton. At least the 2 casinos have their own security staff, and the City of Sparks has a lot better crowd control setup. Reno just doesn't get it I guess.

I look forward to seeing you guys/gals when you come up.

I walked on Virginia street Saturday night. Only thing there at the time was a few craft booths. But I immediately noticed gang colors assembling on separate sides of the streets. Didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out I was in the wrong place at almost the wrong time. I split right away. Downtown Reno is not the place to be for sure.

Kent...I'm sure you'll catch this post...
Shaun, can we have a VMF BBQ at your place and watch HAN from the safety of your home too?
And could you clear out a space for my car as well?

We decided not to do Hot August Nights this year, but I can attest to the bad environment in down town Reno. The first year we attended we stayed at the Peppermill and had a good time. Two years ago we were talked into staying at the Silver Legacy right down town. My daughter had just turned 21 so she and four of her girlfriends came up to Reno and we put them up in the Legacy. First, we couldn't go anywhere on the streets with the girls without obscene comments being passed by punks on the sidewalks. At dinner in Benny Hana's a group of young men got verbally overt with the girls and I almost got myself into a major brawl. That night (Saturday) the noise from the punks down on the street (we were on the 32nd floor) went on all friggin night. At 3am the punks staying in the hotel (it seems the Silver Legacy is the preferred holstelry for gangstas) decided to play a game of hockey in the hallway with the room service trays. I admit that the hotel security scooped these idiots up almost immediately after my complaint to the desk but, all in all, it was not a safe place to be. Either on the streets or in the hotels. Last year we stayed at the Nugget in Sparks. Quiet and populated by lotsa fat old white men up there with their cars. I think I'd like to try either the Hilton or the Atlantis the next time we attend. BTW, the police presence in Reno was pretty heavy. They had the Reno PD, the Washoe County Sheriff and the Nevada Highway Patrol in large numbers. They were also pretty cool about automobile violations. I had my cutouts open last year and got a big thumbs up from a Reno motorcycle cop. It's just that the HAN event has become a destination for gangsters. Sort of their Dinah Shore Classic. Mostly, just stay away from down town Reno at night on the final weekend of the event.
