Like the subject says...how do you lock the distributor so that it doesn't not advance or retard? Just curious after browsing Jegs and seeing timing computers and stuff, and they talk about the distributor needing to be locked.

This would be for a dual advance dizzy (vac/mech). Thanks.

Unless Im thinking backwards, I believe just taking the weights off will make the mechanical advance inop.....and the vacuum obviously can be disconnected.

Could you just use a EEC-III dizzy (no mech or vacuum advance)?

shark,

I figured the vacuum...but what you said about the mech makes sense. I forgot it it is the weights that make the dizzy advance, and the springs that limit just how far the dizzy advances (counters the weights). I guess the other method would be to connect the spring clips with something that is rigid.

It varies by manufacturer.

On MSD you remove the drive gear and weights, raise the shaft in the housing, rotate the mech adv setup until it will seat on the pin, which locks it out. Then you put it all back together again.
