I have a "clunk" and small lurch when I shift from forward to reverse and have been told it is most likely my universal joints. I crawled underneath today to check them out and grabbed the driveshaft to see if I could move it and detect any movement in the u-joints. I didn't notice any u-joint movement but I did notice that I can rotate the driveshaft about 1/2" or so each way. Is this normal? Are my rear gears worn, loose or otherwise? Any help?

So your saying it moves about 1" back & forth. Might be a bit much. I'm sure that has something to do with the "clunk" you hear. But as for being wore-out, probably not. But might be something to think about in the future. I'd replace the u-joints 1st.
