I installed a 1 quart larger pan and a check valve in the cooler return line.

I have no idea how much I took out. I removed the pan and radiator. I had fluid draining out of the case and lines for several days. I'm guessing that the converter is empty or nearly empty.

I am thinking that I should start with 5 quarts and go from there.

Run motor for about 5 seconds shut off and see where Level is

Make final check with motor idling and fluid hot

Frist, I would remove the inspection plate and turn the motor by hand till the drain plug for the converter is at 6 O'clock and drain it. With the deeper pan my car held about 9 Quarts. I started with 4 Quarts. Go through the gears before you check the level. I would stop filling at about 7 or 8 Quarts and let it drain for a while. I always get an inaccurate reading after pouring fluid down the dip stick tube.

Four quarts to start is industry standard "initial fill" on almost all automatics. Then start it up to check and fill from there.
