How much vacuum should I be pulling on my 351C 4V?
Going off one of the intake vacuum ports.

Yes. A good steady reading is what you want. You can try moving
the timing while you have the vacuum gauge hooked up, move the
timing to the highest reading and drive the car. If it pings, back the
timing off a little till the pinging stops. The car should just-not ping.
