the rear in my car has the tag missing....theres a way to tell what gear you have by jacking up the rear and turning the drive shaft and counting the revolutions of the drive shaft and the wheel.. right?...... but i don't remember the formula..... anyone know? thanks jace

Your right. The drive shaft will turn more times that the wheel. To get a more accurate figure, turn the shaft enough times to make the wheels turn 10 times. Then divide the number of times you turned the drive shaft by 10. for example, with a 2.79:1 ratio, you should be able to turn the drive shaft 27.9 times (say 28) for 10 revolutions of the tires. For a posi rear, jack up both rear wheels and turn the wheel exactly one turn & count the number of drive shaft revolutions.

For an open rear, jack up ONE rear tire and turn the wheel exactly TWO turns and count the number of driveshaft revolutions.

This will give you a ballpark figure.
