I just got my rebuilt 200 back and I almost have it all together but I have been trying for an hour to get the distributor in. I had to put the tools away and stop before I screwed something up. I have the #1 piston up at the top---in the book it says at the top after the compression stroke but how the hell do you know? Is there a way to tell when you can't start the car? I pointed the rotor at #1 and have been trying to stuff that baby in but no luck. Should I use a wrench on the bolt that holds the main pulley on and try to turn the motor until #1 comes to the top again? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated....

Ok, let me see if I remember this. Somebody please correct me if I get it wrong. Pull the # 1 plug and stick your finger in (not too far) and turn the engine. You should feel some pressure and some air release from the hole. When it does this, you know you're on the compression stroke. You don't have the dist in so just use whatever method you tried the first time to get the engine TDC. After that, point the dist. rotor where you marked before (you did make a mark where #1 was right?). Slide it down in there, if it doesn't go all the way you may have to bump the engine. Fortunately I have gotten lucky the past few times I did this and it went in right away. Hope this helps some.

The distributor engages in 2 parts. It goes down on the cam gear and then will seat on the oil pump drive shaft. With the motor is on TDC on cylinder 1 on the compression stroke(other post addressed this) turn the rotor just past the #1 position on the distributor cap and slide the distributor in. Once it starts to go on the cam gear you will feel it want to rotate in your hand. Just rotate the distributor very slightly in either direction until you find the oil pump shaft position where it wants to drop in. If its way off pull the distributor and rotate it in the advance direction so that another tooth engages the cam gear and try again.

I do it similar to the others. Get engine to TDC of compression stroke of #1 piston, drop distributor in as far as it will go with it point at/near where the #1 plug wire will be (helps to make a mark on the distributor where #1 will be). The dist. should be able to in so that you can spin the dist. plenty in either direction of the #1 mark (to allow plenty of timing either direction). Don't worry if it won't drop all the way in, that's just the dist. not lining up with the oil pump drive shaft. Put the rotor on (if it's not already), put some slight downward pressure on the rotor, and have a helper turn the key to start until the dist. drops the rest of the way in (note: it's only slight pressure, and is easiest done with the rotor on, or the notch in the dist. shaft tends to hurt hands *LOL*).

After the dist. drops in, bring the #1 piston back up to just before TDC of compression stroke, and spin dist. housing to have rotor point at #1 mark. Put the hold down clamp on, put it all back together, fire her up, and re-time it.

Be sure to turn the engine in the direction of normal rotation when locating Top Dead Center. When the distributor is installed if it is far off of the #1 post, rotate the oil pump drive shaft accordingly.

I had this problem a few months ago. The real problem was that the oil pump driveshaft slipped off of the oil pump when I pulled the distributor out and I didn't know. Everything looked OK from the top but the oil pump and the shaft weren't mating correctly down below.

As far as TDC is concerned, the other posters were right on. Take out the #1 plug, put your thumb over the hole, and crank the engine around. When #1 is approaching TDC your finger will be blown off the hole by the engine compression. It may take a few tries but you'll get the feel for when TDC is approaching and when it's passed.

Good luck! This was frustrating as Hell for me but I did get it.

Hurdle is right on! That is the main problem with getting the distributor seated if all else is aligned properly. I took a small tube and make a square end on it to match the oilpump drive and slightly turn the shaft by hand and the the dist. slid right in...
