We all get those junk emails from friends, family and strangers asking us to forward them on to other friends. I read them then delete them. This one however did catch my eye. Maybe some of you have seen it and already added your names to the list. I am only asking for a moment of your time to read this, that is all.

Written by a 14-year old:

I lost my Dad on September 11th; he was: Chief Edward Geraghty,
Battalion 9, New York City Fire Department. He lost his life with many
other heroes that day, victims of the terrorists. Firefighters from all
over have come to the aid and rescue of the tragedy in New York and
Washington, D.C. Many Firefighters have lost their lives to save someone
else's; the truth of the matter is, they do this every single day. They
truly are heroes. I know many people feel helpless, especially those who
live far from NYC and D.C. We all want to do something, show our
appreciation, our support. I think we can... In honor of the bravery,
courage and determination of American firefighters, there should be a
day in our nation to celebrate and appreciate their hard work and
never-ending passion for saving lives. I think we should honor all those
other heroes who still live today. I'm starting a petition for a
National Firefighters Day. Will you help make every September 11th
"National Firefighters Day"? Please join me!

Thank You,
Connor Geraghty, age 14
Rockville Centre, New York
(I Love u, DAD!!)

PS When this list reaches 250 names, please send it back to me at:
[email protected] <mailto:[email protected]
______

Please copy/paste this e-mail message body into a new e-mail, add the
next number with your name, city, state and please pass it along.

When I add my name to the list that I got it will be number 212. fd

I'm sorry, it appears to be genuine and well-intentioned, but I don't trust or respond to any of these e-mails, period. Spammers will go as low as they have to to get your e-mail address.

I would delete this one as well, but that's just me.

This site claims the story may be true although the person is going about things in the wrong manner. The version there doesn't have the request to forward the e-mail addresses so that could have been added later by someone scamming for e-mail addresses.

I'm sure there are plans out there to make 9/11 a day of rememberance whether it's called National Firefighter's Day or something else. I'm not really sure if collecting all of this information is necessary.

Whenever I get things like what you posted I make it a habit to do a quick search of the usual hoax and urban legend sites. I was suprised to find that yours is authentic. Very cool.

http://www.snopes2.com/rumors/firemen.htm (note the online petition towards the bottom. A much better mechanism to help the firefighters)
http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/blfirefighters.htm (this one verifies the authenticity of the letter for a change)
http://www.house.gov/carolynmccarthy/extensionEdwardGeraghtyFirefighters.htm (very cool. a letter recognizing Connor for his efforts)

No, no... this one WAS true. That is what I was trying to say. I guess I just didn't get my point across.

This particular item has been on CNN and other reputable sites. It's the real deal.
