Mine has worked great. I didn't just buy it for the buying. My Mallory mechanical advance distributor that is fine otherwise started to hang on me. The advance weights would stick on the plate and my timing would jump around unpredictably. I wound up having to lock down my timing. For a while I just ran total timing all the time and managed to burn up 3 solenoids, a starter wire and 2 starters in the process.
I don't like the fact that the advance curve and amount is not adjustable but I haven't had any problems with it that way so far. I am considering going to just a 20 degree start retard and total timing all the rest of the time. My motor seems to idle better with a lot of timing.
MSD makes 4 or 5 different kinds of little boxes that deal with timing in different ways. It would be nice if they made one box that had all the features in it. I guess then they wouldn't make as much money as they do though or they would have to ask 3 or 4 prices for it.
