I've been thinking of buying a 84 GT like "I had in high school". I guess I'm evolving into the next cycle of the hobbie.
So starting to do my home work on th Fox-bodys and started to wonder which one's were the best for 1.performance...2..Handling...3..looks.
The red GT I had in high school was just passed down to me from my sister.I still had my first car--67 coupe I6,3 speed.So ...next to that, the GT was a rocket...Funny I still remember taking the breather off the 6 cylinder to go faster...I was 16.
I really didn't know the spec's on the Gt.All I remember is that I only lost one race to a 67 chevelle. Oh ya...I traded the GT in on a VW dune buggy ...It looked like the SpeedBuggy cartoon,Red fiberglass, for those who can remeber that one..... WHAT WAS I THINKING Better yet WHAT WAS I SMOKING...

Performance, stock I guess a '93 5.0. For more interesting performance an SVO. For a carbureted 5.0, an '85 GT.
Handling, an SVO. Otherwise an '89-93 GT as they started using the bigger brakes in '89.
Looks is a personal thing. I like the "shark mouthed" '85-6 cars. It seems everybody and his brother still has plastic headlight cars, but not so many "four eyed" ones around. '84 and earlier cars aren't bad but somehow the grill never really appealed to me.
If you plan on modifying one quite a bit, it doesn't matter, they all have great potential. The '83 and earlier cars are harder get some parts for though.

What about the '87 T-bird? I have had fantasies about a turbo T-bird (for the manual trans pedals) with a 429. MAN!!! Power everything, style handling, room....WOW! And Saleen stuff would bolt right under that thing!

1992 IS THE BEST! LOL The 93 cobra is fine, We had one just didnt seem a whole lot faster than my stock 5.0... The earlier 80's didnt have very much HP.. A T-Top would be cool!

I agree with thr T-tops, my 84 had a sunroof but I think I would like the T's.
There's a 91 in our paper today . I haven't called,I still don't know if I like the front ends on them better than the 84's. But I could live with it if it meant more HP!!!

In 84 it was about 200 HP (with a Carb) In 90-92 it was rated at 240 (fuel injection).
I love the foxes. They get good gas milege and they are quick! Very lightweight.. I

Only the Cobras made 240hp,the GT's were 225.


I like the 86 SVO,85 5.0 lx,89 (pre air bag)LX and GT's.
The 94-95 Cobras are said to be the BEST 5.0's,not real foxs but good cars.

Theres an 84 GT on the Lemon Lot here at Randolph AFB (San Antonio,TX) for $6000(!) white/ grey interior 5spd fresh paint last year,been on the lot about 6mounths or more now so I'm sure it can be had for less. Not mine or anybody I know.

Yeah the LX 5.0 were the same..
SN-95 Weighed alot more then the Foxes. Were all around bigger.. Like a 70 and a 71 mustang.
Why pre air bag?

My parents had an old Mercedes,the air bag fox wheel reminds me of that big ol bus wheel in the Mercedes.

The 89"s also wieghed about 200lbs less than the airbaggers.

The 94/95 do wiegh more than foxes but they are also stiffer and better braked.

My '86 GT Convertible will always be one of my favorites... However, the '86 SVO we had may lead to purchasing another sometime...

I'd go with a '92 LX. It was the last year for forged pistons and the first year for body color molding. It had the 16" "Pony" wheels to which came on '91-'93s. Overall, my favorite Fox year.

I am partial to my 1990 LX 5.0 coupe and my 89 Saleen Convertible. 89-93 are the best years... I would also go for a 85GT... Last carb...

'87-'93 GTs have same aero front end and ground effects. The '90-'93 models had improved gears in the T-5s --reverse was also synchronized in '90-'93 so you don't get the gear grind going into reverse like I did with my old '89 5.0 GT.

'86-'88 5.0L Mustangs have Speed Density controlled engines. '88 California-built 5.0L Mustangs have Mass Air controlled engines. All '89-'93 49-state 5.0L Mustangs came with Mass Air engine control. Mass Air is very receptive to engine modifications. Speed Density is not.

'89 was the last year [in the Foxes] for tilt steering. Early '90 models don't have an arm rest, but arm rests were reintroduced in the later '90-up models. My 25th anniversary '90 GT does not have an arm rest, since it is an early '90 model, but then again, I don't bang my elbo on the arm rest shifting gears like I did in my '89 GT.

I like the '85/'86 GTs but personally, I think the '87-'93 bodies look much better.

'87-'93 GTs came with 16-spoke 15" aluminum wheels. '91-'93 GTs came with 5-spoke 16" aluminum wheels.

My '90 GT with the 16-spoke 15" factory wheels that originally came on it:

The GT louvered rear tail lights were a little too "busy" looking to me, so I replaced them with smoother, cleaner looking tail light assemblies from an '87-'93 LX Mustang:

If you want fuel injection, go with '89 and up, due to the mass-air, as stated previously. I don't know who came up with the fact that the airbag cars weigh 200 lbs more, it's just the extra weight of the bag and the 2 sensors and a few wires... my '92 only weights 85 lbs more than my old '89 did, and my '92 has a sunroof.

The 5.0's had forged pistons up through the '92 model year, so if you're planning on throwing in a little nitrous or forced induction, that'd be your best bet.

You just made my day! I have a '92 5.0 LX and my name is also Ryan..




Also guys the 93 5.0 had added smog equipment that choked it up so it was rated at 205 HP...

I have a '91 5.0 LX Coupe that's still in pretty good shape :thumbsup: It's fun to drive and parts (performance or otherwise) are plentiful.

I put a 3:73 rear in with a close ratio T5. It was AOD :p
Some nice Z rated tires, equal shorties with a Bassani catted X pipe, bigger MAF...

I have some GT40P's with an Explorer intake and a BBK 75 mm throttle body on the bench for it as well.

No wonder I can't get anything done on my 66....

FWIW, the GT's are a bit heavier than the LX's with the same engine and handling packages... :popcorn:

My late '89 has the 140 MPH speedo and the 25 Years dash emblem.

For something different I prefer an '85 or '86. If you want the best Foxbody I'd go with a '93 Cobra.
