Well, my replacement modem came in today and I am finally back on line. The lighning strike that hit my house fried the old one, along with the modem to my daughter's computer, my DirecTV satellite reciever, and my daughter's TV.

All in all I consider myself pretty lucky. I have about 10k in home audio and video equipment that survived without a problem (and the house didn't burn down).

I didn't realize how much I use the the internet until I was stuck without it for a week.

By the way...don't buy the cheapo surge protectors, they obviously don't work that well. At least the phone line portion didn't help much.

Most good surge protectors come with a guarantee. Some of them will cover up to $25K in damage if they fail.

You can get surge protectors for the phone lines and the cable as well.
