I saved the worst rust repair for last: the driver's side shock tower and frame rail. I originally thought I could just cut out the rot and patch it, but after looking at how the shock tower was installed, I realized I couldn't do that. I had to remove the entire piece. I'm glad I did, as most of the rot was between the frame rail and the motor mount support bracket. I also found minor rust between the shock tower and the fender aprons.

Here's a couple of pics:

Now on to frame repair and installation of shocktower...in a couple of weeks. I have to nap first.... :p

Glad to see you decided to take the whole thing...looks like you've done some excellent prep work. Now comes the fun part. Are you going to just rosette weld the panel in using the hole or are you going to weld down the entire seam. I have seen it done both ways...of course they weren't welded completly down the seam from the factory..but I have heard this strengthens the entire structure. I haven't decided which way I'm going on that yet.
Keep us informed...and remember..lots of pictures!

Rosette welds are the way to go, since most are already drilled. I'll have to drill about 10 on the flanges that attach to the frame rail. I just bump the voltage and wire speed up and start in the center, and spiral outwards. I've got big-mouth clamps to keep the fender aprons tight against the shock tower itself.

I'll also weld-through primer both sides that are pressed together. I hate rust!

Geez Mid, I have a Coupe that looks just like that :p
Problem is, it looks just like that on both sides. How is the other side on your car?

I REALLY had to read this post. After all, MIDLIFE "shocked". I could understand "STARTLED", but I though something electrical was going on here (lol)
