i found it was better to take my time with the install.
is it to late to offer advice?

Make sure you clean, clean and clean again. Making sure all the old rust is off the surface which you will be welding to is key. When I started my panel replacement, I started with this panel. I got about 3/4 way done and found that I had not cleaned one of the panels well enough and ended up tearing it back out and buying a new piece and doing it again...right.

My advise is to get a bunch of C-Clamps and start at the front making sure the oval of the radiator support lines up with the new piece. I then worked my way back and down. Don't be afraid to use a good body hammer to get the new metal as close to the old metal to insure a close weld.

Good Luck :)
