Has anyone installed AN to inverted flare fittings from Borgeson (925121) on their PS box? I want to know how much these fittings normally need to be tightened. This is for my 1966 Coupe. My pressure fitting is "weeping" under pressure and I've really cranked it down (1/2" breaker bar)! :surprise:

Common mistake is AN fittings are 37* and SAE are 45*. If the line is stainless it takes more torque to tighten it. But if you are tightening it with a breaker bar something is not right.

These are the steel AN6 to 16 x 1.5 inverted flare fittings that screw into the cast iron power steering box. The steering box accepts the inverted flare so the connection is a heavy steel fitting into cast iron, not tubing.

Weeping between the box and the fitting, is that correct?
(inverted flare in the box, mated to inverted flare on the steel fitting)

Oh I thought it was the line that was weeping. You could put some sealer on the threads that may help.

Barring no crack in the case at this particular location, you
have two options. Unfortunately, both involve removing the
fitting to address the situation. You could seal the fitting
threads as coup3w indicated. It's a weep and that may be
enough to do it.
The other solution is to address the flare itself. That is
probably where the actual issue is. It's not quite machined
correctly, it's scratched, it's..... you fill in the blank.
There are seals that are used in the industry for that
specific purpose. For both 45-degree automotive SAE and
for 37-degree AN/JIC. It's this kind of item.....

Thanks for the idea! I just ordered some flare seals (copper version) and will report back. I'm hesitant to try to seal the outer threads because there's >1000 PSI in the supply line...

I am using 2 of those fittings and neither leak a drop with normal torque . Are you sure it is leaking on the "box" side not the hose side? The HP hose has to be steel AN fittings (37*).

Thanks, I'm pretty certain it's the fitting at the box, but I'll double check over the weekend. I'm using Earl's steel PS AN fittings.

I removed the fitting (it looked fine...) and replaced it with a new one then retightened everything and now, no leaking! :smile2:
