I have been doing some reading in advance of rectifying a head gasket problem, and after reinstallation, the shop manual tells me to 'use Oil to seal the threads' before torquing up. Another 'How to Build Your Engine' book suggests to seal the head bolts by applying a silicone type sealant before torquing.

Being both a bit confused and somewhat cautious, what is the experience of others regarding sealing the head bolts, and what torques do you typically use (Windsor 302, 351W heads). Finally, do all or some of the head bolts actually go into the water jacket?

None of the head bolt holes in any of the racing SBF's I've built have ever gone to water as I would definitely know since I stud all my engines...

Follow the lubrication and torque specs of the fastener manufacturer, even if it is in contradiction to the service manual...

I usually torque head bolts dry and stud nuts with a coating of engine oil on them....

The only bolts I know of that might require some sealant prior to torquing are the flywheel/flexplate bolts on some SBF's, which go through to the crankcase area on the crank rear flange.....also, some timing cover bolts go through to water and need some sealant on them...
