I just bought a '68 'vert. The previous owner said it was a 302. He doesn't know much about cars so I can't go on his assumption. The car was originally a 289. How can I tell if this is the original engine, or for that matter if this is a 302 or a 289?

Thanks,
Bill

This is a crystal ball question. No matter what the casting number is, some rebuilder could of made a 302 out of a 289 block, or vice versa. The main difference in the two is the stroke. A 289 has a 2.87" stroke and a 302 has a 3" stroke. If you really have to know, you might have to pull the pan and check the #'s on the crank. A 302 is a 2M. A 289 crank is a 1M.
